From Austin, most drivers simply follow I-35 South straight into San Antonio. The drive typically takes about an hour and a half, depending on traffic and construction, and you’ll pass through fast-growing communities like San Marcos and New Braunfels along the way. This route is almost entirely interstate, making it an easy option for visitors heading into San Antonio for a weekend getaway, business trip, or day visit.

From Houston, the most common route into San Antonio is via I-10 West. Once you merge onto I-10, it’s a direct shot across Southeast and South-Central Texas, with long, open stretches of highway and several small-town stops where you can refuel, grab a bite, or stretch your legs. As you approach the San Antonio area, I-10 flows directly into the city, connecting you with the loop system and downtown, the River Walk, and surrounding neighborhoods. For many visitors, this drive offers a relaxed transition from the Gulf Coast region into the heart of South Texas.

Drivers coming from the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex generally take I-35 South all the way down through Waco, Temple, and Austin before continuing on to San Antonio. It’s a longer but very direct route, and staying on the interstate helps simplify navigation if you’re unfamiliar with Texas highways. Those starting from Corpus Christi or the Coastal Bend usually take I-37 North, which leads straight into San Antonio and ties into I-10 and I-35 near downtown.

No matter which direction you’re coming from, major interstates funnel directly into San Antonio, making it a convenient hub for regional road trips across Central and South Texas.
