Planning a road trip to Dallas is straightforward thanks to the city’s position at the center of Texas highways. The Dallas–Fort Worth area is large and well signed, so set your GPS for your exact neighborhood—downtown, Uptown, or a northern suburb—and leave a little buffer for weekday rush hours along I-35E, I-635, and the Dallas North Tollway.

From Houston, stay on I-45 north into Dallas; it feeds straight toward downtown with quick options to branch onto I-20 or I-635 to circle around the core. From Austin or San Antonio, follow I-35 north to Hillsboro and take I-35E toward Dallas. For Plano, Richardson, or Frisco, transition to I-635, President George Bush Turnpike (SH-190), or Sam Rayburn Tollway (SH-121) for an efficient finish; for downtown, continue on I-35E and use I-30 or Woodall Rodgers Freeway for the final approach.

Arriving from Oklahoma City, run I-35 south to the Denton split and choose I-35E for Dallas. This route lines you up for quick connections to SH-121, the Dallas North Tollway, or I-635 if you’re staying in the northern business hubs. From the east, Little Rock travelers take I-30 west directly into the city, while Shreveport arrivals use I-20 west around the southern arc, then angle north on I-45, I-35E, or I-635 depending on your hotel or neighborhood.

From West Texas, I-20 east carries you toward Dallas with an option to hop onto I-30 for a downtown finish, while drivers from Wichita Falls typically follow US-287 and I-35W through Fort Worth before continuing on I-30 into Dallas. Throughout the region, tollways and managed lanes can save time during peak periods; most are cashless, so set up a compatible Texas toll tag or confirm your rental car’s policy. Watch signage at the I-35 splits in Hillsboro and Denton—“Dallas” is clearly marked via I-35E—and you’ll roll into the city with minimal stress and more time for museums, parks, and a well-earned meal.
